Upping My Game

May 8. 2024 I always did my best to keep our home’s bathroom clean - dusting the ceiling, scrubbing the walls, sink, tub and toilet and washing the floor. I was satisfied that I was doing a good job, but as with most things in life, there is always room for improvement. I discovered this when we installed new light bulbs. We couldn’t find the regular style/wattage we had used since installing the wall fixture years ago, so we purchased and put in four new “daylight” bulbs. Flipping the switch was like walking into bright sun – the light bounced off the blue walls, causing me to shield my eyes.

The more time I spent in the newly lit bathroom, the more flaws I saw when looking in the mirror. Eek! Is that a gray hair? Ahhh!  A new wrinkle? Even my husband noticed it took him longer to shave because now he saw more errant whiskers!

Aside from our facial features, I noticed flaws in the towel cupboard and sink cabinet – the white wasn’t white anymore – more scrubbing was needed. And even though I had scrubbed the tub (while still using the old wattage) I was aghast to see a distinctive ring. Not pretty. So back to scrubbing with a stronger cleanser.

Similarly, the longer I spend in God’s Word, immersing myself in the light of His truth, the more I discover areas where I fall short of His standard. Being human I am bound to slip up, make mistakes, etc. but thankfully God never gives up on me. There is always room for improvement. The Light of the World came to vanquish the darkness. He continues to shine His light in the shadowy corners of my heart and mind, exposing attitudes, opinions, and issues that need attention. “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life”(John 8:12 NIV.)

We have since grown accustomed to the bright bathroom light. My husband no longer threatens to put the dull bulbs back in. Likewise, I long to become so accustomed to doing God’s will that it becomes a part of me, just like those gray hairs and wrinkles.-Judyann Grant
