Looking at our calendar, you would think my husband and I lead a very active social life. And
it’s true: the older we get, the more “dates” we have . . . dates with the eye doctor, dentist, cardiologist, orthopedist, gastroenterologist, podiatrist, primary care physician. Our bodies
are complex, there is no “one stop shop” to take care of all our aches, pains and ailments. Our schedules fill with appointments, tests, consultations, etc etc!
Occasionally I try to self-medicate pain away. My “go to” remedies involve Tylenol and a heating pad. But there comes a point when I admit I need professional help. I seek out whatever “ologist” I need for a particular difficulty.
The Bible tells us that our hearts are complex too. This world beats us up. Our hearts are broken, our emotions bruised. We may become bitter, angry, resentful. We self-medicate, numbing or dulling our heartache with activities, indulgences, mindless television or internet. While these remedies may work in the short-term, the symptoms always return.
Proverbs 4:23 advises, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." The state of our heart is connected to our actions. If our heart is filled with love, wisdom, and goodness, our behavior reflects those qualities. If our heart is filled with negativity, envy, or deceit, these emotions will manifest in our actions and words.
Thankfully there IS a “one stop shop” to take care of all our heart ailments. There is a way to turn anger, wrath, bitterness, resentment, etc. into compassion, gentleness, forgiveness, and love. But we can’t do it on our own. We need God’s help.
When we surrender our hearts to Jesus, He promises . . . “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws” Ezekiel 36:26-27 (NIV). – Judyann Grant
