My Son, My Enemy

November 7, 2023 II SAMUEL 19

4 The king covered his face and cried aloud, “O my son Absalom! O Absalom, my son, my son!”

Absalom was very handsome but looks can be deceiving. When David looked at his son he matched the interior with the exterior, even though it wasn’t so. In fact, King David was so enthralled with his son that if it wasn’t for God’s providence Absalom would have succeeded in killing David.

Fortunately, Joab, the commander of David’s army, helped him see the light.

Then Joab went into the house to the king and said, “Today you have humiliated all your men, who have just saved your life and the lives of your sons and daughters and the lives of your wives and concubines. You love those who hate you and hate those who love you. You have made it clear today that the commanders and their men mean nothing to you. I see that you would be pleased if Absalom were alive today and all of us were dead. Now go out and encourage your men. I swear by the LORD that if you don’t go out, not a man will be left with you by nightfall. This will be worse for you than all the calamities that have come on you from your youth till now.”

It is important to see our children as they are the good, the bad, and the ugly. Whatever we see in them we should treat our children as our Heavenly Father treats us. God loves us unconditionally, and He is always truthful but never brutal! He never glosses over our sin nor does He coddle us. Sometimes He lets us suffer the consequences of our actions, but He never gives us what we truly deserve. I for one am grateful that I live in the dispensation of grace! Love your children unconditionally, pray for them fervently, be a Godly example daily, and when all else fails... - LG

James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
