Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.” 22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place and made a feast. 23 Now it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her. 24 And Laban gave his maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah as a maid. 25 So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you deceived me?” Genesis 29:21-25
Jacob means supplanter: to supersede (another) especially by force or treachery. We don't always reap what we sow, but in this instance, God let Jacob feel the sting of deception that Isaac felt when Jacob deceived him. It was a harsh but necessary lesson that he would never forget.
In those days women had few options. Their primary goal was marriage and children, which is a wonderful role to play but if you couldn’t achieve them you would live in your father's, brother's or the nearest relative's house...alone. You would more than likely never know the joy of marriage or children
As I think of Leah's wedding night I cringe slightly. As Jacob's love was expressed in Leah's ear, knowing she was not the first choice or maybe not a choice at all, there must have been tears. But God had a plan! "When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her womb; but Rachel was barren."-Genesis 29:31
I wonder what Rachel was thinking that night as she slept isolated in her tent. I also wonder which of the sisters loved Jacob the most? Whoever loved Jacob most I don't know, but I do know the competition began
Jacob's six sons by Leah: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. Reuben (the first born), Levi (the priestly line), and Judah (the kingly and Messianic line).
So Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name [e]Reuben; for she said, “The Lord has surely looked on my affliction. Now therefore, my husband will love me.” Genesis 29:31-32 I love this scripture because it reminds me that we don't have to worry about vindicating ourselves. The Lord will!
Now when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister, and said to Jacob, “Give me children, or else I die!” And Jacob’s anger was aroused against Rachel, and he said, “Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?” Genesis 30:1-2
There is a stark contrast between Leah and Rachel that we need to remember. Rachel was the one who stole her father's idols and lied to him as she sat on them. When Laban accused Jacob of taking his idols he replied, With whomever you find your gods, do not let him live. In the presence of our brethren, identify what I have of yours and take it with you.” For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.-Genesis 31:31-32 This could have been a death sentence for Rachel, but the Lord remembered her and fulfilled His plan for her too!
Jacob's two sons by Rachel: Joseph and Benjamín.
Leah was ahead, but God gave Rachel Joseph. One of the most beloved types of Christ in all of scripture! I love how God works!
Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin. So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).-Genesis 35:19
Jacob buried Leah in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre in the land of Canaan. The place of honor!
There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife, there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah.-Genesis 49:31-LG
